 Platoon (1986)
IMDB rating: 8.20
Plot: Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) is a young, naive American who gives up college and volunteers for combat in Vietnam. Upon arrival, he quickly discovers that his presence is quite nonessential, and is considered insignificant to the other soldiers, as he has not fought for as long as the rest of them and felt the effects of combat. Chris has two commanding officers, the ill-tempered and indestructible Staff Sergeant Robert Barnes (Tom Berenger) and the more pleasant and cooperative Sergeant Elias Grodin (Willem Dafoe). A line is drawn between the two officers and a number of men in the platoon when an illegal killing occurs during a village raid. As the war continues, Chris himself draws towards psychological meltdown. And as he struggles for survival, he soon realizes he is fighting two battles, the conflict with the enemy and the conflict between the men within his platoon.

Question for all army people?
And please no rude answers or swarthy retorts because we are all grown ups here.
But when you were in the army, did you ever have to do push ups in the mud? Or is that a myth that I see in most television shows. What was the push ups in mud like and was it only you or a whole platoon and what did it have to do with the army? Can people also contact me to talk if they are willing? My YIM is luckygirlstorm. I look forward to meeting with you!
I’m not joining the army but I know somebody who is and I am just trying to separate facts from fiction. He doesn’t care whether he gets dirty or not.
if your afraid of doing pushups in mud try crawling through puddles of blood with you arm and legs blown off.
with one mistake we all take the brakes
`~~I shine, not burn~~`

Know whats better than pushups in the mud? Pyramid pushups in the mud.
Khaos | Feb 04, 2010
I think ALL military branches have done pushups in the mud. The army just does it for fun.
bumblebee_4tuna | Feb 04, 2010
While my boyfriend was in BCT they did, they also all had to crawl in the mud and roll in it until they were completely covered. Everyone in his PLT did it. It was interesting to watch on their training dvd.
Army Girlfriend | Feb 04, 2010
yes it does happen, its called Corrective Training. Its to prepare you to pass your PT test. oh and because drill sgt’s think its funny to do to Pvt’s
SwissMiss | Feb 04, 2010
If its raining and you’re outside during training then yeah, you’re gonna get muddy and messy especially during field training. It’s just a fact of life. The Army is an outdoor sport.
Ray | Feb 04, 2010
Oh, it happens. More common in Basic Training than the "real Army" but it even happens there. When I was at Fort Drum, NY, our whole company had to do it once because we weren’t acting motivated enough about the fact that we were conducting Physical Training in the cold with a lot of slush on the ground. The NCOs sought out a nice muddy area next to the volley ball court to teach everyone a lesson.
Personally, I just embraced the suck (literally) and made sure to get as muddy as I could. Everyone else joined in the "fun." By the end of it, even those NCOs who had conceived of this punishment had gone in themselves and were all just one big muddy happy team. Teamwork is key.
We all went upstairs after PT, took hot showers, then spent the next hour mopping mud from the barracks hallways. Again, we kept up a good attitude about the whole thing - these kinds of situations can really bring a unit together, ironically.

 War and Peace (1956)
IMDB rating: 6.60
Plot: At the beginning of the 19th century, Napoleon’s forces controlled much of Europe. In Russia, one of the few countries still unconquered, the army prepares to face Napoleon’s troops in Austria. Among the soldiers are Nicholas Rostov (Jeremy Brett) and Prince Andrei Bolkonsky (Mel Ferrer). Pierre Bezukhov (Henry Fonda), a friend of Andrei’s and self-styled intellectual who “knows what’s right but still does wrong,” is not interested in fighting. Pierre’s life changes when his father dies, leaving him a vast inheritance. He is attracted to Natasha Rostov (Audrey Hepburn), Nicholas’s sister, but gives in to baser desires and marries the shallow, materialistic Princess Helene (Anita Ekberg). The marriage quickly ends when Pierre discovers his wife’s true nature. Andrei is captured and later released by the French, and returns home only to watch his wife die in childbirth. During a visit to the country months later, Pierre and Andrei meet again. Andrei sees Natasha and falls in love, but his father will only permit the marriage if they postpone it for one year. While Andrei is away in Poland on a military mission, Natasha is drawn to Anatole Kuragin (Vittorio Gassmann), a scoundrel and libertine. Pierre tells Natasha of Anatole’s past before she can elope with him. Napoleon (Herbert Lom) invades Russia. Pierre visits Andrei on the eve of the battle, and observes the battle that follows. Traumatized by the carnage, he vows to kill Napoleon himself.

As a former disc jockey, I could relate to Play Misty for Me. That movie is truly scary in the fact that I lost a friend in a similar situation like that a while ago.
I also liked Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Space Cowboys, The Gauntlet and a few others, as well.
rickdvd2007 | Oct 16, 2009
Josey Wales
Pale Rider
Gauntlet
Sister Sara
Also, but with an asterik: Every which way but loose
Trust and Believe | Oct 16, 2009
Play Misty For Me is my all time favorite Clint movie. My husband would say Gran Torino, but that’s only because he doesn’t appreciate older movies. He’s a clown.
